ONE Championship has planned a huge card for its return to Japan in ONE 165. The featherweight title is on the line in a showdown. As first reported by Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso.
The matchup has been at the forefront of the American’s mind since arriving in ONE. Tonon started his MMA career with Nguyen as the featherweight champion. “The Lion Killer” has always expected a meeting against Nguyen.
Tonon was able to rise to the top of his division by using his world-class Jiu-jitsu. Tonon won against Johnny Nunez, Shamil Gasanov and Thanh Le after a loss in his title attempt against Thanh Le. Both performances reaffirmed Tonon’s status as a top contender for the division.
Since losing his crown to Le, “The Situ-Asian” has had up-and-down success in ONE. He returned to his best form in February with a three-round dominant performance against Leonardo Casotti. If he wins against Tonon, he will be back at the top of his division and aiming to get the gold around his waist.
